DEPUTY CORONER

Salary Range: $23.84-$29.80/hour

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Status: Part-Time

POSITION SUMMARY

The deputy coroner will act as the elected coroner’s additional assistant when the current deputy is not available to cover those duties. The deputy must be prepared to respond when there is multiple call in a day.

Responds to death scenes, investigates circumstances surrounding death, gathers information from law enforcement, family, witnesses, and photographs scenes. Reviews medical records as needed and makes determination as to whether further investigation needed. Deals with family as needed. Supervises removal of body to Coroner’s office. Writes detailed report of investigation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

· High school diploma or GED; and,

· Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

· Must be able to work variable hours.

Licenses and Certifications:

· Certified Death Investigator

· Valid Colorado Driver’s License

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

· Carries out supervisory/managerial responsibility in accordance with policies, procedures, and applicable laws, including: interviewing, hiring, and training staff; planning, assigning, and directing work; establishing deadlines; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; coordinating, developing, and approving staff training; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

· Performs functions related to determining cause of death, including: pronouncing death and determining time of death; investigating scene; collecting evidence; conducting investigations and interviews; examining body; procuring and analyzing medical records and conducting related research; taking custody of the body; overseeing the removal of the body from the scene; making positive identification of the deceased; notifying next of kin, and issuing death certificates.

· Prepares and/or reviews complex, routine, and non-routine reports, and analysis; receives, sorts, and summarizes material for the preparation of reports; prepares work reports; relays and interprets administrative decisions, policies and instructions.

· Serves as a liaison to other agencies and/or member of various committees, boards, and/or teams and collaborates, persuades, presents reports to, and negotiates with others outside own work area to coordinate efforts and maintain cooperative and efficient relations.

· Prepares for and testifies in judicial proceedings.

IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Operating and maintaining all assigned equipment required to perform the essential functions of the job

· Communicating orally with internal staff, citizens, and other departmental staff to give and receive information in a courteous manner.

· Performs other duties as assigned
