POSITION SUMMARY

Performs functions related to landfill operations including: compacting and covering garbage; picking up garbage; assisting customers; inspecting waste for appropriate disposal/recycling; receiving payments; operating scale; maintaining records; and performing equipment maintenance tasks (changing oil, lubrication, making minor repairs, etc.)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED; and,

  • One to two years of progressively responsible related experience; or,

  • Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Colorado Driver's License 

  • Certification in Landfill Operations

  • First Aid and CPR

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

  • Operates a variety of equipment used in landfill operations, including: front-end loader, compactor, dozer, pickup, computer, cash register, and calculator.

  • Operates equipment to complete various activities related to department functions, including: compacting garbage; covering garbage; preparing waste disposal areas; picking up garbage; directing landfill traffic; maintaining landfill grounds and facilities; opening and locking gates; and performing related general labor functions.

  • Operates office type equipment and performs related functions, including: greeting and assisting customers; explaining procedures and regulations; inspecting waste materials/recyclables and accepting or rejecting same; weighing and recording each load by type of waste; directing customers to appropriate location; generating computerized scale tickets; and collecting for cash loads. 

  • Maintains accounts receivable documentation, including; obtaining signatures; writing receipts; totaling cash tickets; balancing receipts with daily report; and maintaining related files. Uses computer to prepare daily, monthly and yearly reports.

  • Answers telephone and/or two-way radio; takes messages; provides information to callers; receives citizen complaints; and directs calls and messages to the appropriate person.

  • Performs generalized maintenance and safety checks on equipment including: refueling, greasing, changing filters, and checking/changing oil, water, tires, and/or other equipment and vehicle components.

  • Documents equipment and safety checks; maintains documents related to scheduled maintenance and equipment servicing.

  • Operates various hand and power tools in the performance of routine maintenance duties.

  • Performs manual tasks and various other support functions.

  • Performs traffic monitoring and control including the distribution of barricades, warning signs, safety cones, and the flagging of vehicles.

 

IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs general housekeeping functions, including: cleaning and maintaining equipment; maintaining facility grounds; removing snow; sweeping scale, etc.

  • Disseminates a variety of information to various agencies, divisions, or departments via telephone, mail, or FAX.

  • Assists other staff members in completing functions.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
