WORK SCHEDULE: Approximately 20-28 hours/week Mondays & Tuesdays 12-6 and Thursdays 10-6.

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs and assists with a variety of professional and administrative functions, under the direction of the Library Services Supervisor, associated with library programming and children’s, teen and adult services including planning and implementing a comprehensive program of services to children, teens and adults. Maintaining the books, displays and toys in the Children’s Room. Planning and presenting story times and other children, teen and adult activities. Assisting with circulation desk duties as needed.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

· High School diploma or GED; and,

· Six months to one year of progressively responsible related experience; or,

· Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

· Experience working with children

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Knowledge of children’s cognitive/social developmental levels.

· Ability to engage and lead a group of children and their families; ability to be creative, artistic, imaginative, dramatic and expressive.

· Must enjoy working with and be able to communicate effectively with children, teen and adults.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

· Under the direction of the Library Services Supervisor, assists with developing and executing programs in the library, including but not limited to: planning and presenting story times, craft and Lego clubs, music and movement programs, and annual Summer and Winter Reading Programs for children, teens and adults. As well as other children, teen, adult and family programs and special events.

· Assists with children’s, teens and adult services including; gathering information on reading programs, planning activities, registering program participants, documenting program activities, creating signage

using computer programs, developing and distributing newsletters, flyers, brochures, articles, etc. Advertising programs, creating exhibits and displays; maintaining various records and certificates; explaining program requirements to participants; selecting and ordering materials and prizes; teaching library skills (i.e., using computer, catalog system, library cards, rules, etc.); working with staff members to assess needs; and providing assistance to parents, teachers, and other members of the general public.

· Operates the circulation desk and related customer service functions, including: checking materials in and out; answering reference questions; maintaining petty cash and receipts; receiving money for fines, fees, etc.; entering information into computer system; preparing deposits; registering new patrons; procuring materials from neighboring libraries; shelving and maintaining books, periodicals and other materials; assisting patrons in use of computers and other library equipment assisting patrons in locating reference materials; and answering phones, providing assistance and forwarding calls to appropriate staff member.

· Prepares routine and non-routine reports utilizing a variety of software; receives, sorts, and summarizes material for the preparation of reports.

· Carries out overdue book recall procedures and figures, collects, and records fines.

· Makes minor repairs to materials; makes recommendations for materials to be added to collection; maintains records of all materials processed.

· Processes interlibrary loans, including: processing requests; pulling, packing, and mailing materials; tracing requests, maintaining logs; and notifying patrol of material availability.

· Documents local historical information, etc.

· Opens and closes facility; operates security system; empties drop box.

 

IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Performs general housekeeping functions including cleaning and maintaining equipment; maintains facility grounds by performing various landscaping functions, removing snow, sweeping steps, etc.

· Enters information into a computer terminal and uses the computer system to retrieve data.

· Disseminates a variety of information and/or reports to various agencies, divisions, or departments via telephone, mail, email or fax.

· May serve as backup for other positions within the department.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.
