POSITION SUMMARY

Performs a variety of professional and administrative functions, under the direction of the Library Services Director, in order to provide library materials to the public in a timely manner through acquisitions, removal of books, and preparing new books and materials for all areas of the library; cataloging books for all areas of the library; and database maintenance of all library records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

· Highschool diploma or GED; and,

· One to two years of progressively responsible related experience; or,

· Any combination of education training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

· Operates the circulation desk and related customer service functions, including: checking materials in and out; answering reference questions; maintaining petty cash and receipts; receiving money for fines, fees, etc.; entering information into computer system; preparing deposits; registering new patrons; procuring materials from neighboring libraries; shelving books, periodicals, and other materials; assisting patrons in use of computers and other library equipment assisting patrons in locating reference materials; and answering phones, providing assistance and forwarding calls to appropriate staff member.

· Coordinates acquisitions, removal of books, and prepares new books and materials for addition to the collection throughout all Library branches.

· Collects orders for library materials using software for acquisitions and for interfacing with vendor databases. Checks against existing collection to avoid duplication, including: reviewing library book catalogs and professional library review journals; selecting books and materials; submitting book/material orders; maintaining related records; and taking book requests from patrons.

· Catalogs library books and materials, including: utilizing Dewey Decimal Unabridged classification schedules, tables, and indexes to place and locate materials; entering data into database and providing Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) to automation system vendor to update and maintain Internet information; locating and updating bibliographic records; analyzing database records; and resolving database discrepancies.

· Prepares library materials for addition to the collection; recommends materials to be added to the collection; makes repairs to materials; and maintains records of materials processed.

· Carries out overdue book recall procedures and figures, collects, and records fines.

· Processes interlibrary loans, including: processing requests; pulling, packing, and mailing materials; tracing requests, maintaining logs; and notifying patrol of material availability.

· Prepares routine and non-routine reports utilizing a variety of software; receives, sorts, and summarizes material for the preparation of reports.

· Assists in designing and preparing and designing exhibits; assists in developing and distributing instructional materials.

· Assists in social media, marketing, and the website.

· Processes donated materials including making decisions regarding Friends of the Library sale items.

· Assists with maintaining programs, supplies, and equipment in compliance with COVID restrictions.

· Handles routine complaints and answers a variety of questions at the circulation desk.

· Assists in planning and program work as directed

· Recruits and trains library volunteers.

· Documents local historical information, etc.

· Opens and closes facility; operates security system; empties drop-box.

· May be required to travel for the completion of duties in relation to specific tasks or programs.

· Assists with youth programs, Books on Wheels, and Friends of the Library

IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Performs general housekeeping functions including cleaning and maintaining equipment; maintains facility grounds by performing various landscaping functions, removing snow, sweeping steps, etc.

· Disseminates a variety of information and/or reports to various agencies, divisions, or departments via telephone, mail, email or fax.

· May serve as backup for other positions within the department.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.
