SAFETY COORDINATOR

POSITION SUMMARY
Performs a variety of work involving planning, organizing, coordinating and reviewing safety programs for the department; disseminating safety information and training employees regarding same. Active role in the Safety Committee and may assist with county-wide safety training.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED; and,
- One to two years of progressively responsible related experience; or,
- Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Licenses and Certifications:
- CPR/First Aid Certified Trainer
- Flagging Certification Trainer
- MSHA Certified Trainer
- Valid Colorado Driver's License
- CDL preferred but not required
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)
- Coordinates department safety programs, including: notifying supervisor of work hazards and other safety issues; conducting research to determine new safety policies and procedures; reviewing safety-related laws, regulations, etc., and disseminating information to staff; preparing for and setting up classes; purchasing safety supplies and equipment; working with supervisors and/or Human Resources to schedule training; conducting safety meetings; teaching classes; and organizing incentive programs.
- Administers alcohol tests after accidents and on a random basis.
- Reviews accident report forms for the department and assists the Safety Committee in reviewing county-wide accident report forms to determine safety issues; recommends improvements, changes in procedures, etc.
- Prepares complex, routine, and non-routine reports utilizing a variety of software; receives, sorts, and summarizes material for the preparation of reports.
- Serves as a liaison and/or member of various committees, boards, and/or teams and collaborates, persuades, presents reports to and negotiates with others outside own work area to coordinate efforts and maintain cooperative and efficient relations.
- Collaborates with other agencies to provide programs/services.
- Performs specialized research and statistical work on assigned subjects for staff and management.
- Enters information into a computer terminal;
IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains and upgrades knowledge, skills, and development by attending seminars and training programs and reading trade and professional journals and publications.
- Performs functions of other staff, as needed, including: filling in at the department’s front office, participating in crack sealing projects, and filling in duties as a light equipment operator and/or a heavy equipment operator. May serve as backup for other positions within the department. (Salary will be adjusted accordingly for light-duty operator and/or heavy equipment operator duties.)
- Disseminates a variety of information to various agencies, divisions, or departments via telephone, mail, or FAX.
