POSITION SUMMARY
The position of Wildland Crew Member requires extensive training in responding to, combating, extinguishing, preventing wildfires. The individual will be required to learn and participate in the performance of tasks in emergency situations, which may require strenuous exertion in difficult terrain and inclement weather. The job requires the individual to complete a basic training program, learn the county geography and operate fire apparatus under emergency situations in adverse weather and terrain conditions. The Wildland Crew Member will also help procure and maintain wildland equipment, supplies, and apparatus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or GED; and
- One to two years of progressively responsible related experience; or,
- Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Must be able to work variable hours.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid Colorado Driver's License
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)
Work as a crewmember (Engine) in wildfire suppression. Fire suppression work includes, but is not limited to: constructing fireline utilizing hand tools; cutting and clearing vegetation utilizing power saws; performing structure protection; conducting mop up and patrol operations; assisting with burn out and backfire operations; operation of pumps; installation of hose lays and water delivery systems; driving 4 wheel drive vehicles; hauling and packing fire related equipment and supplies; and maintenance and repair of tools and equipment.
Responsible for providing for individual safety at all times.
Requires basic wildland fire experience and knowledge, rudimentary skill in firefighting tasks, and the ability to recognize and communicate safety considerations and other factors (fire intensity, fuel conditions, weather observations, etc.) used by higher qualified firefighters in their decision making process.
Ensure equipment (i.e. fire engine, vehicles, and firefighting tools) is operational and safe.
Travel to wildfire incidents, severity assignments, and pre-position assignments.
Requires being on-call/available for assignments that may last for two weeks or longer. Work schedules will be expected to be flexible and modified at times to fit the need. Requires working long hours (up to 16 hours per day) in outdoor settings and performing strenuous manual labor, under extreme environmental conditions. Requires the ability to live in primitive accommodations such as temporary camps, tents, and trailers.
PHYSICAL AND RELATED REQUIREMENTS:
Performs moderate/heavy physical work lifting weights of 75 pounds, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to regularly walk, stand, or stoop. Use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity; Ability to talk and hear in person and by telephone and radio. Ability to see and read instructions. Ability to carry equipment up and down steep mountainous terrain; Walk, stand, crouch, or run on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces; Regularly drive a motor vehicle; Work for sustained periods of time maintaining concentrated attention to detail; Need to distinguish between shades of color; and communicate via radios. Applicants must be able to meet the requirements of the Work Capacity Test (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters at the arduous level during the probationary period for new hires. Incumbents are required to take and pass this test annually.
